Our Intent Statement for English
At All Saints CE Primary School and Nursery, we believe that being able to read is the foundation upon which all learning begins. Children must acquire good reading skills in order to access the information that will support their development in all curriculum areas. In addition to this, we want to inspire children to want to read for pleasure as well as for learning. By making reading enjoyable and accessible, we aim to show our pupils that books are not just tools for schoolwork, but gateways to adventure, creativity and new worlds. This sense of enjoyment enhances their overall literacy, strengthens their ability to think critically, and encourages curiosity, making them motivated to explore a wide range of subjects across the curriculum. Reading for pleasure becomes a source of joy, inspiration and personal growth, laying the foundation for a future filled with knowledge and exploration.
Our overarching aim for reading at All Saints CE Primary School and Nursery is to promote high standards and to develop a love of literature in our pupils through widespread reading for enjoyment.
We intend that pupils will be able to:
- read easily, fluently and with good understanding
- develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
- acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
- appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
We believe that by fostering an early joy of reading through the use of carefully selected texts, we can inspire children to enhance their writing skills. By providing our pupils with opportunities to adapt their writing to different purposes, we aim to give them the tools to become confident, versatile communicators.
